Annandale is the first and only distillery to offer Mizunara casks for private purchase, marking a groundbreaking moment in whisky maturation. These rare casks are sourced in small quantities from the sustainably managed, ancient forests of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture.
Mizunara oak trees require at least 200 years to mature before they can provide sufficient length between knots to create full cask staves. Known as the ‘Water Oak’ due to its tight grain and highly porous nature, Mizunara allows whisky to penetrate deep into the wood, drawing out complex and distinctive flavors.
Mizunara oak imparts an exotic character to Annandale’s fruit-forward whisky. Expect warming spices like sandalwood, cinnamon, and clove, alongside delicate notes of coconut, mango, and hints of citrus, all beautifully complementing Annandale’s signature malty sweetness.
Mizunara oak casks remain incredibly scarce and have traditionally been available only through closed competitive auctions. Their rarity, craftsmanship, and distinctive maturation properties make these casks an extraordinary and exclusive choice for whisky connoisseurs.

Widest Range of Casks
At Annandale, we take pride in offering the widest range of casks. Sourced from the finest distilleries, bodegas, and wine cellars worldwide, each single cask boasts unparalleled provenance. We continuously seek out rare casks that elevate the flavour of our spirit to its fullest potential.

Cask Custodian
The Mizunara oak is only available closed auction; Coopers compete with Japanese bespoke cabinet makers for a share of a very limited supply.
Is it worth mentioning that less than 200 casks per year are made worldwide. This is a rare cask indeed.
